The Reviews of The Edison's "Lost In The Dream" cd

From Not Lame Records

A classic Not Lame sounding power pop band, this one from the home of Barely Pink, Tampa, Florida. And like BP, The Edisons excel at arousing up sunny, filler-free and peachy keen pop that is filled with plaintive, colorful vocals, inviting and consistently memorable melodies and atoning hooks. Like we said, "a classic power pop sound!" The band mentions The Beatles, Tom Petty, REM, The Jayhawks and The Romantics as influences and, sure those are there, but we hear hints of Raspberries, Gin Blossoms, Klaatu (the title track is classic Klaatu), early 80`s faves like The Producers and Hawks. On the indie/DIY power pop side, we hear Blue Cartoon,The Dreamdayers, BarryHoldship and Then, on such songs as "Just For You" you can hear The Everly Brothers and The Searchers. Each song takes the formula of pop and stretch it in cool, subtle ways that work, probably because the spirit of the band playing the material has been captured in the studio. These guys live an breath some mighty fine sounds and it`s all captured on this crisp and richly produced gem of a entertaining and enchanting record. Extremely Highly Recommended!!

Jangly, glistening guitars are the order of the day throughout this gem that draws from all the right sources - The Beatles (the most prominent), The Gin Blossoms, The Jayhawks, REM, Tom Petty and 70's AM pop!  Throw some 80's New Wave in there too!  It's all-good!  Top-notch songwriting!  Terrific harmonies!  The songs sound familiar yet original!  A real grower!  GREAT!!

Lost In The Dream - by the Edisons. Okay, I mentioned this disc in last month's column … but this superb disc merits an encore endorsement. If I had heard this disc last year, it would have been a solid Top Ten contender in 2004. From start ("The Start") to finish ("Leaving" a terrific finale with a pumped-up "Heart Full of Soul" riff), this is one fine pop album. When tracks don't glisten with jangly guitar riffs, they still chime and overflow with catchy melodies and hooks. "Just For You" may be the most notable of the chiming tracks, but every track is a winner. I hear occasional references to the Rumors, Dom Mariani and DM3 and Diesel Park West - that means that this disc will stand the test of time.

Tampa's The Edisons offer a respite to listeners worn down by the self-pity and cynicism of contemporary commercial rock. ``Lost in the Dream,'' even in its darkest moments, holds out hope for a happy ending.

That's apparent from opening track ``The Start.'' The upbeat sentiments are bolstered not only by the lyrics but by the music, particularly the smooth harmonies of the chorus.

The title track is the album's epic, with its appealingly hazy psychedelic touches and hopeful lyrics (I'm not giving in / 'Cause tomorrow may bring skies of blue).

Hints of The Beatles, Cheap Trick and The Cars are apparent. Power pop fans in particular will be susceptible to The Edisons' considerable charms.

+ We are in great debt to Thomas Alva Edison, great inventor and businessman. Among other things, phonograph, electricity, light bulbs, and radio.

+ Maybe, that's why some Tampa Bay's musicians decided to use his last name to name their band. A power pop band. The EDISONS.

+ They have an excellent album you should hear immediately. Lost in the dream (2005) is a perfect album, full of great songs. There you have all the necessary in each and every song. Guitars, voices, melodies, and rhythm.

+ They are a whole new group, with no immediate reconocible sounds, except that of a great pop job. And this is an added value, since these are songs you have never listened before, really. Of course, you can smell some of their influences, The Beatles the main probably, but you will also remember The Dwight Twilley Band if you hear the flame., but also Tears for Fears (again, the fab four) in the title track.
